Mediate.com has published Don Philbin’s review of “Short and Happy Guide to Mediation”, a new book written by Will Pryor. According to Philbin, ~~ Will Pryor’s “Short and Happy Guide to Mediation” is both. You can read it in a sitting, and probably will. But it covers the waterfront too. Pryor teaches the latest negotiation theory, but the focus is decidedly on applying it in practice. The book not only helps neutrals, it helps parties and their advocates better utilize the process to maximize results. Each practice pointer is backed up with a vignette too funny to have been made up. Will is brilliant, but delightfully folksy and very readable. Read on ~~~

ACR Hawaii President Lynn Murison wrote: ~~~ Suzanne Greenwood, CEO of the Institute of Arbitrators & Mediators of Australia (IAMA) established 39 years ago, visited Hawaii in May. She had previously made contact with ACR Hawaii through our website. On May 12th, members of ACR Hawaii were delighted to meet with her for lunch at Café Julia’s. We had a wonderful time swapping stories about mediators, arbitrators, and attorneys/barristers. We found that alternate dispute resolution practitioners are the same the worldwide. The biggest difference between America and Australia was that practitioners must be certificated by the government. Once certificated, they must belong to a accredited association like the IAMA and must complete continuing education credits each year to keep their certificate active. We had a wide ranging discussion about long distance mediation challenges, mediations concerning indigenous peoples, and the impact of new technologies. Suzanne invites our members visiting Brisbane, Australia to contact her by email — ceo@iama.org.au ~~~

The Compassion Fatigue/Vicarious Trauma – Considerations for Mediators workshop to be held on Friday, June 6th from 5:00-7:30pm will be presented by Elizabeth Kent, the recently retired director of the Judiciary’s Center for Alternative Dispute Resolution (CADR) and active ADR practitioner. As mediators we all try to include rapport, empathy, and compassion in the set of skills we bring to every mediation. Using them can impact the mediator by internalizing what we receive from the clients. Multiple mediations can have a cumulative impact on how we deal with it. Elizabeth will discuss the issues of vicarious trauma, also known as compassion fatigue, discuss successful coping techniques, and help participants design an action plan for resiliency in this interactive class. This workshop is open to active Mediation Center of the Pacific volunteer mediators at no cost. The location is in the Kukui Center Conference room – 245 N. Kukui St., Ste 103 – Honolulu. MCP will also provide light refreshments.
