ACR Hawaii President Lynn Murison wrote: ~~~ Suzanne Greenwood, CEO of the Institute of Arbitrators & Mediators of Australia (IAMA) established 39 years ago, visited Hawaii in May. She had previously made contact with ACR Hawaii through our website. On May 12th, members of ACR Hawaii were delighted to meet with her for lunch at Café Julia’s. We had a wonderful time swapping stories about mediators, arbitrators, and attorneys/barristers. We found that alternate dispute resolution practitioners are the same the worldwide. The biggest difference between America and Australia was that practitioners must be certificated by the government. Once certificated, they must belong to a accredited association like the IAMA and must complete continuing education credits each year to keep their certificate active. We had a wide ranging discussion about long distance mediation challenges, mediations concerning indigenous peoples, and the impact of new technologies. Suzanne invites our members visiting Brisbane, Australia to contact her by email — ceo@iama.org.au ~~~

In April 2014 Mediate.com published Video-Based Mediation – It’s Starting to Happen. What Do We Need to Know? – an article written by Noam Ebner, an assistant professor at the Werner Institute at Creighton University’s School of Law, where he chairs the online graduate program in Negotiation and Dispute Resolution. In his article, Ebner also cites the importance of what ACR Hawaii board member Giuseppe Leone is doing (and discovering) in Virtual Mediation Lab, an online mediation project sponsored by ACR Hawaii to help mediators around the world learn to mediate online and practice their skills by participating in Free online mediation simulations. With Jeff Tompson (Griffith University Law School), Ebner also wrote an article on another key ODR (Online Dispute Resolution) topic: Body language and how to create trust in online mediation. Soon to be published in the “International Journal of Online Dispute Resolution”, that article is titled At Face Value? Nonverbal Communication & Trust Development in Online Video-Based Mediation
Local Connection – MCP Mediation Pledge
By Rick Blangiardi – General Manager, KGMB and KHNL We all know Hawaii is the “aloha” state. But even in the aloha state, things go wrong. Conflicts erupt, relationships are damaged and trust is broken. When that happens, we have been conditioned to pick up the phone, call a lawyer and file a lawsuit. This approach is damaging for the parties involved in the dispute and harms the community because it focuses only on who is right and who is wrong, who should win and who should lose. There is a better way to address disputes. It is mediation. With the assistance of an impartial mediator, mediation helps people keep talking and negotiating creative agreements that can meet all of their needs. To encourage people in Hawaii to use mediation first before filing a lawsuit, the Mediation Center of the Pacific has created a mediation pledge. The pledge says that I won’t sue before I try mediation. I have signed the pledge and ask that you do the same. Together, we can keep aloha in the aloha state by choosing mediation first. To show our support and commitment to use mediation, go to HawaiiNewsNow.com or the mediation center’s website at mediatehawaii.org and sign the mediation pledge today. A message from Cheryl L. Jamison, President of the Association for Conflict Resolution Last week, we announced an exciting ACR initiative designed to give new practitioners an extraordinary opportunity to present their research and their story at our Annual Conference, Oct. 8-11, 2014, in Cincinnati, Ohio. An international jury will select seven New Voices-Emerging Professionals to present their work in prime time during the conference. The presentations will focus on an area of research done by the presenter which will engage our diverse membership in new ways and help enhance the practice of our members. The presentation of our selected emerging professionals will feature research highlights, lessons learned and unique areas of practice. The presenters will explain their projects or demonstrate some aspect of their work, making it “come to life” for the audience. The jury panel is looking for exciting practice or research that will enhance the knowledge and practice of our diverse membership. The panel will select 10-15 minute presentations and pair them with other plenary sessions. All current or recent students in programs specializing in conflict resolution or interdisciplinary programs in which conflict studies are an integral part may apply. Practitioners who may not have been students in certificate or degree programs but have done other forms of training and have entered the field in the last five years are also invited to apply. For more information about the New Voices – Emerging Professionals juried selection click here I am looking forward to hearing from these emerging professionals at our conference. If you have any comments for me, please contact me at cheryl.jamison26@gmail.com Cheryl L. Jamison, President of the Association for Conflict Resolution
Teresa F. Frisbie, director of the Loyola Chicago University School of Law Dispute Resolution Program, has recently written an article titled Can Online Videoconferencing Tools Help the Mediation Process? In short, she presents the experience of Professor Vikki Rogers of Pace University in New York, Colin Rule (a leader in Online Dispute Resolution and founder of Modria.com), and Giuseppe Leone at Virtual Mediation Lab, an online mediation project sponsored by ACR Hawaii, to demonstrate how “online mediation tools have come a long way in the last decade”.
