How to Participate in the November 15, 2014 “Ceeds of Peace” Workshop

If you plan to participate in the November 15, 2014 Ceeds of Peace workshop, please read the following message by Dr. Maya Soetoro-Ng, Dr. Kerrie Urosevich and Lisa Taylor, Ceeds of Peace Executive Director.

~~~
We at Ceeds of Peace hope you are all doing well. This is a friendly email to say hello and remind you of the second (and last for 2014 on Oahu) Ceeds of Peace workshop, this coming Saturday – November 15th.
NEW & IMPROVED LOCATION University of Hawaii, West Oahu campus at 91-1001 Farrington Highway in Kapolei – very easy to find. Located just off H-1, only 25-30 minutes from Honolulu. This is not a big campus like UH Manoa – there are only 5 main buildings so you won’t get lost! We are in the new Multi-Purpose Room on the 2nd floor of the Campus Center (building C) – just a few steps from the parking lot. Elevator and stairs to get to the 2nd floor. Air conditioning and good chairs for comfort!
PARKING – Visitor Lot A is easy to find – enter the campus and veer right at the grassy round-about (driving circle) and the parking lot will be on your right. Park in any stall that does not say “permit required” (there are many open stalls). Walk across the road you just drove in on, to the Campus Center and go to 2nd floor.
TIME – Registration and breakfast from 8:00-8:30am; program will start at 8:30am and end at 3:30pm for all attendees except DOE teachers getting PD credit.
BRING – Any materials that you were given at our first workshop on 9/13/14, including your participant folders; any materials related to your Peace Action Plan(s); the “Reflection” homework – see below; minds ready to learn! (new attendees, don’t worry about materials you don’t have – you will get these on Saturday).
FOOD – We will provide a light breakfast, snack items, and lunch foods to keep everyone’s blood sugar levels up, so no need to leave for food. Please bring refillable water bottles and/or coffee containers if you have them.
RETURNING ATTENDEES – Those of you that have worked on your Peace Action Plans, this will be a good time to continue your efforts, gather feedback, and get assistance from the Ceeds of Peace Facilitators. BUT please do not worry if you have not accomplished as much as you had hoped! This is NOT required for your attendance. We are here to help guide you in whatever direction you would like to go with bringing the Ceeds of peacebuilding into your life.
NEW ATTENDEES – In the afternoon, everyone will be guided in creating a Peace Action Plan, and we will have materials available for you to do this, as well as the assistance of facilitators. You will also be able to collaborate with other participants, both returning and new.
REFLECTION HOMEWORK – We have some constructive homework we are asking you to spend a short time on at home BEFORE you come on Saturday. In order to best use your time for the writing and discussion of your individual Peace Action Plan, it will help if you open one of the attached documents and read through the questions and do your best to answer them ahead of time. Please note that these questions and your answers are for your reflection only -you will not need to share your answers. Please do BRING your answers with you, though, to be used as your reference during the action plan work. If you would like to share your thoughts with your group and/or facilitator, that is totally fine – it’s your choice. This homework is meant to help you understand WHY you are participating in Ceeds of Peace and how we can best serve each one of you!
ATTACHMENTS – There are 3 different documents here – but you just need to focus your attention on ONE of them, and you get to choose. Your choice depends on where in your life you would like to bring more peace – your home/family life? Your work life? Your community life? Your teaching/classroom life? Keep our 7 Ceeds in mind when deciding: Critical Thinking, Courage, Conflict Resolution, Compassion, Collaboration, Commitment, and Community. Ceeds of Peace is designed to help ALL attendees gain critical skills of peacebuilding and be able to implement those skills in whatever environment they choose – and this will determine your focus on Saturday. So please choose ONE from the following:
1 – PARENT/FAMILY MEMBER/CAREGIVER
2 – COMMUNITY MEMBER (a very wide group – for example, nonprofit work, Girl/Boy Scouts, after-school care programs, YMCA, baby/child huis, sports teams, counselors, therapists, church groups, many others….)
3 – TEACHER/EDUCATOR – Can be a classroom teacher, after-school care teacher, speciality teachers, educators of all kinds and levels
And remember to bring your print out with your answers on Saturday – you will not need to share – that is up to you.
BRING A FRIEND – We are encouraging all of you to bring a friend with you, and this is possible due to our new and improved venue! Please think of inviting a family member, teacher, neighbor, work colleague, volunteer buddy, or any friend you would like to share Ceeds of Peace with. If an additional person will be coming, please tell Lisa at: lisaiwalani@gmail.com or 808-256-0040 (text OK) so we can have enough food and folders for all, mahalo!
Please arrive a bit before 8:30am Saturday, and we look forward to a productive day.
Aloha nui loa
