Suzanne Greenwood, CEO of the Institute of Arbitrators & Mediators of Australia (IAMA) established 39 years ago, visited Hawaii in May. She had previously made contact with ACR Hawaii through our website.

On May 12th, members of ACR Hawaii were delighted to meet with her for lunch at Café Julia’s. We had a wonderful time swapping stories about mediators, arbitrators, and attorneys/barristers.

We found that alternate dispute resolution practitioners are the same the worldwide. The biggest difference between America and Australia was that practitioners must be certificated by the government. Once certificated, they must belong to a accredited association like the IAMA and must complete continuing education credits each year to keep their certificate active. We had a wide ranging discussion about long distance mediation challenges, mediations concerning indigenous peoples, and the impact of new technologies.

Suzanne invites our members visiting Brisbane, Australia to contact her by email — ceo@iama.org.au
